Mobilizing Change

Postsecondary education can be a catalyst for lasting social change. When you donate, you give through Carleton toward people with purpose who want to change the world for good. Here is a glimpse at some of the ways that you, as a caring and generous donor, have shared in our sense of purpose and have supported Carleton’s people in developing solutions that lead to positive change.

MacOdrum Library

The MacOdrum Library mobilizes students to bring about positive change in our communities by providing access to resources that open the doors to discovery. It is through donor support that the Library has been able to expand its collections so our next generation of leaders can deepen their knowledge on prevalent issues. Thanks to the generosity of donors, this past year the MacOdrum Library has been able to acquire:

  • Black Thought & Culture: This comprises of approximately 100,000 pages of non-fiction writings by major American Black leaders-teachers, artists, politicians, religious leaders, athletes, war veterans, entertainers and other figures-covering 250 years of history.
  • Wiley Journal backfiles: This includes electronic versions of older journals, including Canadian Public Administration, Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, Canadian Geographer and Canadian Review of Sociology.
  • Air & Space Law: This is a searchable collection of books, documents, reports and more on legislation that regulates air and spaceflight.
  • GeoscienceWorld Ebook Collection backfiles: GeoScienceWorld releases a new collection of books each year on earth sciences, thanks to donor support the Library was able to expand its collection to include the 2018 and 2019 editions.

"These challenging times have taught us how quickly situations can change. Knowing that a resource is available online means there’s no delay to students accessing the materials they need to do their work. The availability of digital resources has always been essential to student success, especially now. ~ Laura Newton Miller, Head, Collections and Assessment, MacOdrum Library. "

Paying it Forward through Monthly Giving

Awards and Financial Aid

Donors like you are increasing accessibility to higher education through the establishment of awards and financial aid. By alleviating financial barriers, more students are able to engage in opportunities that will inspire the ideas that have the power to change our future for the better.

Check out the testimonials below from students who received financial support, and a donor who shares the impetus behind establishing a bursary through Carleton.

Olivia (BHSc Hon/21)

"You could not have imagined my delight when I found out I was the recipient of a bursary! During the pandemic I have faced a wide array of hardships like I never had before. Concerning finances, I had a very hard time finding safe work throughout the summer as I am living in a household with a grandparent and two immunocompromised parents. I felt such relief when I received your donation as I knew that my tuition for the upcoming semester would be partially covered."

Amsey Maracle, Master of Public Policy and Administration Student

"Nya:wen kowa for the selecting me as a recipient for Carleton University’s Indigenous Graduate Student Award. I am honoured to accept this award and truly grateful for this support as I work towards achieving my education goals. Thanks to your generous support I am the first in my family to attend graduate studies. My parents, family and community are extremely proud, and I am so grateful for your contribution to ensure my education journey at Carleton University is successful."

Bruce Doyle (BEng/4), Established the Bruce Doyle Bursary in Engineering

"I remember walking across the stage and receiving my degree. Given my meager start, it made me think of all those who went before me. I thought about the people that built the school into what it was. All the passionate professors who taught me and gave me gifts that allowed me to have an amazing career.
All the support staff that kept the impressive campus running, so we had a place to learn. I was privileged to receive several bursaries that provided me with financial aid. I knew that if I was ever able to give back, it was not a choice but a responsibility. I feel very privileged to have been given the opportunity to attend such a great institution."
